Searching _ Interview with Sawf

It’s certainly a memorable one. So how would you describe the difference between your new release on Modal Analysis and your ‘Flaws’  release on Perc Trax?

Well the time gap is huge, the Modal Analysis tracks are not so easy to include in a techno mix. Most of the Flaws tracks were made at least with the dance floor in mind or what I think could work on the dance floor. The Modal Analysis tracks were tracks that I made without having a release in mind. The guys who started the label are personal friends so out of a huge number of unreleased tracks they heard from me; they picked the oddest ones.

Yeah, I’m really liking the label, the Cassegrain release is great too. It must be more freeing to not have had the pressure to have to have a certain focus in mind while making a track?

Well I never have a release plan when I make a track, that goes down for all Perc Trax releases as well. Only remixes are made for a specific cause. Modal Analysis is trying hard in the right way. A label based in Athens is something that is much needed.

Ya it is. That Yves De Mey Remix is quite impressive also. You mentioned in a previous interview that music scene there wasn’t so good there, has that changed in recent times?

Nope, you can’t blame anyone really, things are fucked up so it’s pretty risky financially speaking to make any serious moves.

Yeah, have seen a few nights close down in Dublin.. It’s really hard to make ends meet for organisers and often the safest bet is for some to just book the same big names. Which is a pity as there are some talented musicians that people miss out on seeing. Ireland is also in the middle of a really hard-hitting recession; do you think the music scenes in countries such as ours might start moving more underground as a result?

Well from where I stand I’m not trying to convince anyone as for whom should they book or not. I don’t really get the ‘underground’ term. Speaking for Athens, things are pretty random. There are small groups of people who try to make things work their own way despite the recession but I don’t know if it’s gonna last. It is pretty rare for Athens to maintain something serious.

Yeah, the term seems to be overused quite a lot, thus taking away from the original meaning.

Probably. You’re right.

What do you use to produce music?

Software mostly and a synthesiser. Ableton and a Korg.

Lovely stuff. What kind of Korg, had a go of a friend’s Kaoss Pad before, that was fun.

Microkorg.

Nice. So, I suppose we had better finish up this chat soon, one final question, If you could change one thing about mankind, what would it be?

That’s deep. I think it will be a bit silly for me to express an opinion.

For me it would be hypocrisy.

For me it’s showing off in general.  Posing as you may call it.

Couldn’t disagree with that one! Thanks again for having this chat with me Sawf. Really looking forward to hearing the mix you have prepared for us!

Hi I’m Rachael and I love exploring different thought processes and ranges of emotion through the medium of music. Music has caused me to find people of similar mindsets and build beautiful friendships. There is nothing more enjoyable than dancing and feeling the frequencies flow through your body while getting lost in a cacophony of sound, which drenches the senses so soothingly. I also really enjoy reading, ranting and researching. https://www.facebook.com/Rachbehere http://soundcloud.com/rachbehere
