Back Track 02 _ Gez Varley / G-Man _ G-Man II EP
So what is your studio like now? Have you stripped it back as computers have got more powerful, or do you have a bit of a mix? I see you use a MPC live – Is it important to your production set-up too?
I dont have too much stuff at the moment. Over the years I´ve moved a lot, so it was impossible to keep moving all my stuff with me. Right now, I still have my Akai MPC 4000, which is a big part of my productions and my Casio FZ. I´m using Ableton with my Mac laptop. In the future though, I think I´d like to get an old Mixer again and a couple of cheap FX’s and go back to the old school way of working.
I really enjoyed your release on Sonic Groove at the start of the year. What is coming up next for you? Can we expect to hear more of that harder sound?
Yeah, I`m just working on some new tracks for Adam X and Sonic Groove, so hopefully there will be a release next year.

Who do you rate at the moment? What music is exciting you?
I like some of the stuff from Perc ,Adam X, Skudge, Henrique Casanova and a few others, but to be honest there´s just too much rubbish coming out from a load of wannabe producers. It takes a good while to find anything half way decent and that’s due to the amount of rubbish that I get sent every day and also the amount of stuff that gets released every week.
You played at Suicide Circus around this time last year – what was that like? You were playing with Henning Baer and Subjected, weren’t you? I hear great things about it. Do you gig much and what are you playing?
Yeah I played at Suicide Circus. It was a cool night with a great crowd and Henning Baer and Subjected were cool also. I was living in Germany on and off for the last 13 years so I´ve played all over Germany and I really like the Country and its people. Right now I´ve just moved back to England for a number of reasons. My live set is around an hour and a half… and done mainly on the MPC and the laptop. It’s hard to fit in all my best tracks and still play some new ones.
I’m sure there have been a few close shaves over the years Gez.. What’s been the craziest place that music has brought you?
Yeah I´ve been all over the world doing music, both with LFO and G-Man and have been in a lot of crazy situations; to say the least hahaha. One time after an R&S record label party in Gent, Belgium, I rode a bike into a canal while drunk and almost died. Lucky for me, a guy pulled me out of the canal, who just happened to be the nephew of Colin Newman (Owner of Swim Records)!! Talk about a small world. Yeah, I think I´ve used up all of my nine lives for sure.
I heard you saying that you were going back to college? What are you hoping to do? What was the motivation behind that? How are you going to balance that with music?
Yeah, I´m looking at going back to school to study something new. Maybe History. We will see what happens soon. But after 22 years pro in the music biz, I`m getting slightly bored of the biz; though not the music itself. I´ll still continue to do music, but in my spare time though.
Ok, so to close – can you remember saying that this was your favourite question that you never get asked: How many beers can you drink before you fall over?
Ah ha.. Yes! I remember this question!
Well, due to ill health I can’t drink that many beers anymore, so I would say 2 is the answer hahaha.

As usual, great interview! Lots of interesting point made by gez but I can’t help but smile when I just read about him riding his bike into a canal after the r+s gig. I’m sure it wasn’t funny at the time though :-/
