Token is back with an incredible remix package and the line up is UNREAL: PAS, Ctrls, Sigha, Peter Van Hoesen, Ben Klock & Inigo Kennedy. All killer – No filler. Class music!!
Before we begin, please take a moment to reacquaint yourself with Ø’s Binary Opposition (Process 1) & (Process 2). They will be joined by 6 new remixes on the 25th June and will be released digitally and on three separate 12″ singles..
First up is the Planetary Assault Systems’ Process.
If there had have been Techno in the Viet-Nam war, then this is definitely what it would have sounded like. Luke Slater practically obliterates the original parts to form the most brutal and rhythmically jarring piece of music in this package. The unsettling quantise on the bassline/kicks works brilliantly with the distorted stabbing of the top synth. I love when LS uses filters, as the way he uses them means that you’ll soon lose any notion as to what bit of the track you’re currently listening to.. and there’s a bit of that in the later break. Great stuff!! The atmospheric vocal/pad sound from the Ø original works brilliantly with all the filth. Hope I get to his this in a club soon.
Ctrls’ Process is all about the spaces available around the heavy kick pattern..
As the groove becomes the sum total of its parts, generating and holding intensity, I’m struck by how well produced this is. Ctrls / Northern Structures (& Troel’s DNB tracks) are always different to anything else that you’ll hear around. Pretty much everything I’ve listened by him / them has a different kind of feel to it: Tight interlocking rhythms exist in the signature here too, and unsurprisingly its a powerful track.
Sigha’s Process drops right in at the deep end. Powerful subs and rising atmospherics gradually build into a strong groove. Really cool and clean production on this one. The swirling atmosphere / reverbed hats with that chop – is one of the best bits of ear candy that I’ve heard in ages. Great driving claps. I seen him stream on Waverplay / Wax Works there a few months ago & this was exactly the kind of brilliantly perplexing music that he was playing. Classy stuff.
Peter Van Hoesen’s Process is a twisting & filtering slow burner, with a powerful bottom end. Lots of intermittent grit in this one. The rolling percussion drives it along nicely. Honestly, there’s so much cool stuff going on in the top of this track that I had to get the headphones to check it out all the filters and delays properly. Really cool stuff. Love the panning feedback when it kicks back in.
Ben Klock’s Process is wicked. It’s honestly the best thing that I’ve heard from him in a while (and Brendan Moeller’s – Adjust To The Fading Light is great too). It must be very challenging finding time to produce when you’re doing lots of travelling, so I’m genuinely delighted to hear this. Such a lively track – Love that clap pattern. The way the delays rise up & create tension is superb. The most surprising moment for me on this release is the section @ 3.01, when the new synth comes in. It’s a great variation, then it’s back in with the delays and hat. Brilliant. Would love to hear this out too.
Saving the best ’til last – Inigo Kennedy surely creates another classic in his Process. How could another follow in this shadow? It’s rising synths punctuate the strings perfectly as the track thumps and rolls forward with IK’s pounding kicks. Sure, this is techno and it’s filthy.. but it’s more than that here. It’s a breathtaking moment. Stunning and epic, this is simply beautiful.
I want to buy these records so my Son can appreciate (when he gets older) everything that I love about modern Techno. Really amazing release.

Music production and history are my biggest passions in life.
Though people often say that Techno is faceless and should be about the music blah, blah, blah.. I believe in the need to document the people and stories behind it. Techno is a very small world in reality and I think it needs a proper resource.
I hope that everyone who is interested in Techno finds this blog accessible in terms of the way that it is written. I personally prefer to hear the artists voice as loud as the music and never enjoy synopsised and pasteurised versions of old conversation; the sort that's peppered with the occasional quote here and there.
