Scarce _ Interview With Boner M

Boner M _ Underpass

Theres a real dirty, fucked-up vibe off your music.. and I can hear sounds from everywhere, DnB, Electro.. and Techno of course. I guess that probably gives us an idea into your tastes and approach to music..

“It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing”. The first two jaw & ear openers were Cari Lekebusch and Jeff Mills. Those weirdos really offered different realms for me big time. I haven’t really been keeping up with the latest electronics for many years. 80’s boogie has got such a huge grip on me that techno ‘n shit has been bubbling rather quietly and I’ve been mostly just acquiring long lost treasures and other oldies. Luckily gigs happen so seldom that there is no way I’m getting tired of any record.

You’re from Finland of course Tony.. Is Techno fairly underground there? Or are the the likes of Drumcode & Carl Cox regulars? Is Finland a good place to live?

Very underground. Our capital does have a lot of night club action, but as small town bushmen we have to enjoy every little bit we get. All hear worthy events take place in small pubs and proper areas are scarce. Better this than oversupply.

The only Finnish DJ / Producers that I can think of right now are Samuli Kemppi, Sasso, you, Johan and erm.. Darude haha. Can you tell us about anyone that we should be keeping an eye on from your country?

Hahaha.. Ok! Do you get to play out much? Have you DJ’d outside of Finland much? Any plans?

Just enough not to get frustrated and not idle. Once in a month is a nice average. Never been abroad with my bag, but some options have risen lately.

Listening to your mixes – including the one that you’ve given to us, I’d imagine people have a great fucking time when you play. Would you mind telling us a little about the mix that you have given us? It was an open air thing, is that right?

Sure I’ve seen some pretty weird stuff while spinning. I take it as a good sign. We were at an abandoned horse race track, a decent walk from urban habitation and all that. A couple of handfuls of people were there for most of the time . Hard to guess in the dark, but less than 100 for sure.

The party started in the evening and ended in the morning when the second police squad found us and pulled the headphones off of me. I had no idea while mixing that the police van had parked in front of the hefty speakers. Sure it was nice of them to tell us to piss off, as it was just starting to rain and we were very much “full”. Luckily their attitude changed rapidly when they realized we were not the enemy. The first squad that came by way before the second one, when it was still dark, only checked out we had everything, mainly the bonfire, under control and told us it was a shame that they didn’t have these kinds of things when they were at our age.

Next day was full of rejoicing because according to the tabloids we managed to keep almost the whole city awake wondering where on earth is that pumping noise coming from.

Class. I’d well believe it judging by the mix. Man.. If only all our mixes had this kind of background to them haha.

Music production and history are my biggest passions in life. Though people often say that Techno is faceless and should be about the music blah, blah, blah.. I believe in the need to document the people and stories behind it. Techno is a very small world in reality and I think it needs a proper resource. I hope that everyone who is interested in Techno finds this blog accessible in terms of the way that it is written. I personally prefer to hear the artists voice as loud as the music and never enjoy synopsised and pasteurised versions of old conversation; the sort that's peppered with the occasional quote here and there.
