Mark Rogan _ Anxiety / Paranoia EP [DSNT001]

Serious time and effort has gone into the debut release of DSNT Records and the proof is definitely in the music.  Their mission to deliver forward thinking techno of unwavering and uncompromising quality is supported by remixes from Forward Strategy Group, Paul Mac, Bas Mooy & Jerome Hill.

This first release is a real statement of intent.

Belfast based producer – Mark Rogan, delivers 2 powerful original tracks – Anxiety and Paranoia.

They totally stand up on their own – and would have been wicked as they are.. so its a unreal bonus getting all the cool remixes tbh..

Lead track Anxiety is huge. Its pounding and distorted groove develops slowly into an epic, but tastefully restrained breakdown. The tension is kept with bitcrushed stab/percussion and a series of ominous pads. The whole vibe of this sounds like a screeching train or something and its very is nicely done. Expect heads to be taken off when the kick comes back in.. haha!!

Paranoia is a deeper kind of track – or so you may be tricked into thinking initially. As the trip continues, it ramps up to full on bangin! Rogan’s use of distortion is excellent again, teaming it up with a delay to create a fucked up klaxon noise. This is counterbalanced nicely by cold “ringing” pads and energetic ride cymbals. Quality.

Paul Mac’s remix of Anxiety is relentlessness, tough and driving, with its open hats and rides. A dark percussion loop filters around the back, creating an ever changing atmosphere. Pure filth.. and really jacking. Paul shows how it should be done. 2.29 FTW!

Forward Strategy Group’s rework of Anxiety is literally a brand new track. I love when remixes are completely unrecognisable from the original and this one is certainly that. The only way to describe this track is hypnotic. Deep as fuck and really heavy.. phenomenal work from FSG as usual.

Jerome Hill’s interpretation of Paranoia has an old skool vibe to it, with immense bass, skippy breaks & vocal chops. In the right hands, this schizophrenic tune would utterly wreck it.

Finally – Bas Mooy’s Paranoia remix comes in to annihilate the surivors. It’s unbelievably focused and pummelling.. with a filthy synthetic snare / clap. The main riff in the track is filtered and bitcrushed and sounds kinda reversed. Really cool. It’s also got the best use of noise in a track that I’ve heard in a lonnnng time. Love that “creaky” noise – which probably comes from the pad in the original track – that announces the kicks coming back in. Tough stuff.

Serious tunes. Serious first release. Fair play to Oisín & Co. @ DSNT.

This is available from 9th July on DL.

Cant wait to hear the next one!! 🙂

Music production and history are my biggest passions in life. Though people often say that Techno is faceless and should be about the music blah, blah, blah.. I believe in the need to document the people and stories behind it. Techno is a very small world in reality and I think it needs a proper resource. I hope that everyone who is interested in Techno finds this blog accessible in terms of the way that it is written. I personally prefer to hear the artists voice as loud as the music and never enjoy synopsised and pasteurised versions of old conversation; the sort that's peppered with the occasional quote here and there.
