Prototypes _ Interview With Roebin de Freitas

RdF _ Last

Is there any scope to get some of the old Ante-Rasa crew back together for new material?

Rednox is really a great fan of ETP but it’s hard to get him working on new material because of work-life balance issues we all know about when we’re a couple of years out of university or high school. I see that he’s still active as a DJ and recently had a gig at Tresor. But for now there’s not much happening. I’m sure Rednox will alert me full of excitement when it does!

AH.. Tresor! Are you getting to play out much yourself?

Not that often, no. Maybe my lack of networking skills is the biggest factor in this? I don’t go looking for bookings but I’m sure things will start to move at some point. Or it won’t and that’s fine too. I’m pretty at ease either way.

What about an Ante-Rasa label night?

Actually we’ll be having the first one at Institüt für Zükünft in Leipzig coming autumn. We’re talking through the date and line up at the moment but we’ll make an excellent evening out of it. Especially with the guys from Mørklys being from Leipzig and my connection with the club.

Mørklys is three youngsters whom we’ll be trying to help grow. We’ve been following them for a year or so. They’re very talented and seem to be heading more and more into industrial and experimental territories. Their live performances are really amazing. They will be releasing on Ante-Rasa too. RASA02 has a track of theirs and a remix of mine on it and they will (hopefully) have a digital release too. I’m still waiting for some final tracks but I’m optimist about a good outcome.

I gave ‘IfZ’ one of my tracks to use on a compilation they sold as part of their public funding campaign to install a beast of a soundsystem. The Mørklys guys have heard the Kirsch system in action and were blown away. Can’t wait to let some of my own material loose on such a system!

Are you doing a follow-up to the Doubt vinyl release? I’ve seen you post on FB about something happening on Thrill Recordings?

RASA02 and ANTE01 are in the pipeline. RASA02 will be out early September with two tracks by Lys und Mørklys with two remixes by yours truly. We just got the masters back from Artefacts Mastering and they sound wicked!

ANTE01 is the first digital only release from Ante-Rasa. It’s a four tracker by Swiss producer Ambareesh. It was Rednox’ oozing ear that picked him up. His sound is very mature, recognizable and interesting. I think he’ll evolve to become a real part of our artist family.

I’ve got some plans for myself, yes. RASA03 will be a release by myself with a remix by Orphx. I’m very excited about that and can’t wait to hear back from them. The original track is right up their alley to sonically mangle to pieces.

Excellent!

Besides that there’s two EP’s coming out on Thrill recordings, a promising pure techno label. I have worked together with Tom Dazing, the asshole label boss, on tracks in the distant past. We even had a duo live act at a certain point. So you can say this is a kind of amicable gesture from both our parts.

I’m sure he’s happy with the material. I’ve seen Surgeon play one of the tracks called ‘Stuck Midway’ on his Rinse FM radio show and at Awakenings Festival. I had several people contacting me to ask when it will be out. They’ll have to be patient for that. First of both EP’s is planned in August or September.

(my track is about 28-29mins in)

I remember talking during the last interview, already a year and a half ago or so, about how my last album took a lot of my energy and that it would take me some time to digest. I’ve got maybe another couple of albums in me, though. I love the format. I think I’ll start working on a new one this summer. Locking myself up in my father-in-law’s cabin in the woods and living like a musical hermit for a couple of days will be the starting point. It’s where I made half of my previous album in a monster session.

Well, you should go do that soon then. The result was very good the last time.

Well look, it’s always good chatting to you.. but we’re at the end now. Do you want to tell us a bit about the mix before you go?

I wanted it to be a hybrid set between ear candy and body movers. How I play in front of a crowd isn’t 100% reflected here although I’m persuaded there’s an RdF signature in every set I play.

It’s a mix of something old, something new, something borrowed and something moody blue. The Kracktronik Theme which devastates any dancefloor and Beltram’s Life Force, an all time top 10 techno favourite of mine, are old., The Ante-Rasa stuff yet to be released is new. The excellent stuff people like ANFS, Ambareesh, Mau from Orbis and Ontal sent me are borrowed so to speak and something moody blue is the creepy, dreamy stuff like Nonamaka’s track and Modeo’s. As an added bonus I have added a Unit81 slab that’s still in the editing phase but already gives me the creeps, in a good way.

I can finish by saying thanks for having me again and see you in another two years or so!

Hopefully it’ll be sooner than that Mate 😀

Music production and history are my biggest passions in life. Though people often say that Techno is faceless and should be about the music blah, blah, blah.. I believe in the need to document the people and stories behind it. Techno is a very small world in reality and I think it needs a proper resource. I hope that everyone who is interested in Techno finds this blog accessible in terms of the way that it is written. I personally prefer to hear the artists voice as loud as the music and never enjoy synopsised and pasteurised versions of old conversation; the sort that's peppered with the occasional quote here and there.
